Manorside Academy

Valuing Diversity

We are very proud to serve a rich and diverse community and we are committed to valuing and promoting equality and diversity across the academy.

At our academy  we celebrate our similarities as well as our differences and all children, staff and families ensure that our approach is lived out.

Our curriculum explores identity and celebrates the diverse history of our global community. We understand that all children absolutely need to understand who they are, where they come from and to be proud of their heritage.

We will be working together with our partner academies in the Authentic Education Trust to ensure that our collective commitment to ensuring our curriculum is relevant to all students is fulfilled, reviewed and revisited as an ongoing commitment.

Our equality policy and objectives can be found in the documents section of this website.

Personal Development

Personal Development is at the heart of our learning journey here at Manorside Academy. We are passionate that every pupil receives the very best education possible – filled with opportunities, activities and ‘special moments’ that will help mould them into the people they will become and help improve their Cultural Capital.

We encourage our pupils to be lifelong learners, understanding not only the skills learnt on their journey with us, but how to ‘do life’ with kindness, respect, resilience – recognising that we are all unique, with our own special gifts and talents that need to be encouraged to flourish! These school values walk side by side with our school mantra; ‘High expectations lead to High achievers’.

We support children to acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives, now and in the future. As part of a whole-school approach, Personal Development education develops the qualities and attributes children need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. The benefits to pupils of such an approach are numerous as PD prepares them to manage many of the most critical opportunities, challenges and responsibilities they will face growing up in such rapidly changing and challenging times. It also helps them to connect and apply the knowledge and understanding they learn in all subjects to practical, real-life situations while helping them to feel safe and secure enough to fulfil their academic potential.

Our whole school approach promotes effective relationships between all members of the school community. The promotion of pupils’ personal and social development underpins other learning. Personal Development education contributes to, and assists children to build their personal identities, confidence and self-esteem and understand what influences their decisions. Developing self-understanding, empathy and the ability to work with others helps our pupils to enjoy healthy and productive relationships in all aspects of their lives.Always in an age appropriate way, we help the children manage their lives, now and in the future, and help them to learn everyday, essential, life skills, including:

  • The Development of self-understanding, empathy and healthy, productive relationships (Through the Kapow Scheme for PSHE)
    • Relationships and Sex education and Health education
    • Eating healthily
    • Safer schools Road safety
    • Online safety
    • The promotion of good mental health and well being.

In keeping with our school ethos, the children are encouraged, and frequently reminded, to speak to a trusted adult when they have any concerns or worries.

Protected Characteristics

At Manorside Academy we take every possible opportunity to celebrate and promote equality and diversity in our ever-changing world. We firmly believe that in order for children to grow up and be respectful towards each and every person they meet in life, this must be taught in school and be promoted amongst the wider community. Everyone who comes into contact with our school has the right to do so, feeling that they are a welcome addition to our family and that they will receive the respect that they deserve. Everyone who comes into our school talks about its special 'feel' - this is as a result of the strong ethos that all stakeholders share and believe in.

At Manorside Academy - everyone is welcome!

Public Sector Equality Duty

The Equality Act of 2010 requires us to publish information that demonstrates that we have due regard for the need to eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment, victimisation and any other conduct prohibited by the Equality Act 2010. As a school we pride ourselves in being able to:

  • Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it
  • Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it.
  • Consult with a wide variety of stakeholders regarding the decisions that we make to promote equality and eliminate discrimination; including families, pupils, staff and members of the local community.

We understand the principle of the Act and the work needed to ensure that those with protected characteristics are not discriminated against and are given equality of opportunity.  We also actively promote Character Education across the curriculum and in every aspect of school life.

A protected characteristic under the act covers the groups listed below:

  • age
  • disability
  • race
  • gender
  • gender reassignment
  • maternity and pregnancy
  • religion and belief
  • sexual orientation
  • Marriage and Civil Partnership

As a school we embed the protective characteristics in our curriculum. Please follow the link to see how they are taught within PSHE lessons.

Manorside Academy is an inclusive school where we focus on the well-being and progress of every child and where all members of our community are of equal worth.  The children and all key stakeholders are at the heart of everything we do.  The protected characteristics are weaved through our PSHE curriculum and the day to day routines of life at Manorside Academy. They also link to our work on British Values and our school values.

We believe that the Equality Act provides a framework to support our commitment to valuing diversity, tackling discrimination, promoting equality and fostering good relationships between people. It also ensures that we continue to tackle issues of disadvantage and underachievement of different groups.

Our approach to equality is based on the following key principles - these help us to eliminate discrimination:

  1. All learners are of equal value.
  2. We recognise, respect and celebrate difference.
  3. We foster positive attitudes and relationships and a shared sense of cohesion and belonging.
  4. We observe good equalities practice in staff recruitment, retention and development. There is no gender pay gap at Manorside Academy.
  5. We aim to reduce and remove inequalities and barriers that already exist.
  6. We have the highest expectations of all our children.

Equality Objectives

We are committed to ensuring equality of education and opportunity for all pupils, staff, parents and carers, irrespective of race, gender, disability, belief, religion or socio-economic background. Should anyone feel any effects of inequality at Manorside Academy, we will seek to obtain the person's views and make the necessary adjustments to ensure that the feeling of inequality is eliminated.

In order to further support pupils, raise standards and ensure inclusive teaching, we have set the following objectives:

Objective 1: To improve outcomes for the lowest 20%

Objective 2: Develop an unbiased global curriculum

Objective 3: Develop staff confidence in recognising racism and unconscious bias

Objective 4: Improve outcomes for EAL children

Equal opportunities for all is always discussed at safeguarding, inclusion and governors meetings too.  If you would like discuss anything to do with Equality and Diversity with us, please book an appointment to come in and see us via office@ma.weareauthentic.education .

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

RSE teaching at Manorside teaches children to develop values, attitudes, personal and social skills, and increase their knowledge and understanding to make informed decisions and choices when they are adults. Each year group will be taught appropriate to their age and developmental stage. For more information about this, please read our Relationships and Sex Education Policy.

Why do we teach Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)?

There are four main aims of teaching RSE:

  • To empower children to be safe and safeguarded.
  • To enable children to understand and respect their bodies
  • To help children develop positive and healthy relationships appropriate to their age and development
  • To support children to have positive self-esteem and body image

Manorside chooses to teach Sex Education, and Section 405 of the Education Act 1996 provides the right of parental withdrawal from the RSE provided at school except for those parts included in the National Curriculum. The Science curriculum in all maintained schools also includes content on human development, including reproduction, which there is no right to withdraw from. RSE lesson plans can be can be found within our Medium Term planning for all years under PSHE on our school website.

Anti- Bullying

As a school we are partners with the Diana Award Anti-Bullying Ambassadors scheme. This allows us to continually be proactive and productive in creating ideas, focused days and helpful training for our ambassadors and all pupils at our school.

Our Anti-bullying Ambassadors lead assemblies on ‘what bullying is’ using the STOP acronym (Several Times On Purpose) as well as encouraging all pupils to be ‘upstanders’ to any bulling behaviour instead of a ‘bystanders’.

All of our ambassadors were chosen by their peers by a democratic vote and are known for being a safe person, supportive and ready speak out and support anyone in need. Our aims include:

  • Ensuring all members of the school community understands what constitutes bullying
  • Creating an atmosphere and environment where children, parents and staff feel able to tell the school about bullying if it arises and are confident it will be taken seriously and dealt with
  • To put in place clear procedures for dealing with incidents of bullying.

All classrooms have a ‘ I wish someone knew’ box where pupils can drop a note in anonymously for teachers to follow up on any situation that pupils may feel uncomfortable about, or need to share on behalf of someone else.

Our Anti-Bullying Ambassadors (with the help of some funding from our PTFA), have launched a Buddy Corner initiative to ensure everyone feels they have someone to play with or talk to when on the playground.

MHSST

We work closely with MHSST (Mental Health School Support Team). This organisation is funded by the NHS and is a children’s mental health team providing school-based support and in-depth training programmes to improve the emotional wellbeing of pupils, families, teachers and school staff. We offer a bespoke programme for pupils within our school that may need some extra emotional or mental support at varied stages within their school time here at Manorside.

Each year we highlight and celebrate Children’s Mental Health Week. This is a week that highlights our on-going focus of promoting good mental health for all children.

Promoting our School Values

We are passionate that our school values of Resilience, Kindness, Respect and Uniqueness are embedded into everyday life here at Manorside.

All of our staff and pupils follow and model these four values. We believe that if a member of staff models these values, then a child will copy.

We like to celebrate kindness, respectfulness, resilience and a child’s talents whenever we can. We go out of our way every day to seek and praise all pupils who display these values in their every day lives at school, and we congratulate them for this in our celebration assemblies on Fridays. Our pupils receive a certificate and a personal mention by their teacher in front of the school for being a fantastic example of a Manorside pupil.

Clubs

We are proud of the clubs we offer our pupils. We understand that all pupils are unique and have different gifts therefore, we try to cater for a range of passions and pursuits.

During each school year we provide a variety of after school clubs. These vary from term to term depending on the time of the year and the age group involved. The clubs begin at 3.15 and finish at 4.15. An email is sent out to children and parents during the previous term and places are allocated on a first come, first serve basis. If clubs are over-subscribed, we operate a waiting list system.

Some examples of the clubs we offer are Art & Crafts, Football, Netball, Athletics, Computing, Recorder, Choir, Gardening and Cookery.

To ensure 100% pupils have the opportunity to attend clubs, as the year goes on, we give some pupils first preference to attend a club before offering them out to all pupils.

These are the After School Clubs we currently offer our pupils:

Autumn Term Clubs List

Spring Term Clubs List

Events & Fixtures

As part of these clubs, we encourage pupils to take part in local competitions and are very proud to be working towards the Gold School Games Award for the levels of participation in local sporting events.

Our aim is for all Key Stage 2 pupils to attend an appropriate event or fixture to ensure we are offering as many pupils as possible a wide selection of opportunities outside of the national curriculum.

British Values

The five British values build understanding and critical thinking from a personal, local, national and global context by considering democracy (an understanding of how citizens can influence decision-making through the democratic process), the rule of law (an appreciation that living under the rule of law protects individual citizens and is essential for wellbeing and safety), individual liberty (an understanding that the freedom to hold other faiths and beliefs is protected in law), mutual respect and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs (an understanding of the importance of identifying and combatting discrimination and an acceptance that people having different faiths or beliefs to oneself).

At Manorside Academy we:

  • Enable pupils to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence
  • Enable pupils to distinguish right from wrong and to respect the civil and criminal law of England
  • Encourage pupils to accept responsibility for their behaviour, show initiative, and to understand how they can contribute positively to the lives of those living and working in the locality of the school and to society more widely
  • Enable pupils to acquire a broad general knowledge of, and respect for, public Institutions and services in England
  • Ensure further tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions by enabling pupils to acquire an appreciation of, and respect for, their own and other cultures
  • Encourage respect for other people
  • Encourage respect for democracy and support for participation in the democratic processes, including respect for the basis on which the law is made and applied in England.
  • At Manorside Academy we actively promote the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

SHINE Programme - Canford School

SHINE is a wonderful opportunity for some of our Year 6 children! They attend Canford School for ten Saturdays to explore various subjects which would not only enhance their learning but also introduce them to new and exciting topics outside of their usual curriculum. These sessions are based around a high quality text, encouraging a love of reading and developing Tier 2 vocabulary knowledge.

These sessions could help spark interests in areas they might not have considered before, while also giving them a taste of what learning in a different, prestigious environment might be like.

SHINE

SHINE - Outdoor Education and Sport

Each year children from years 4 & 5 are invited to Canford School to take part in different activities. This year we completed an obstacle course, lit a fire and built our own base. The following day we took part in cricket and tennis. We worked in teams against different local schools. Such an amazing opportunity!
